Week #2 - Question #2 - Hurting A Woman?

On page 115 of "Guerrilla Season", Matt's mom says that she always opens the door first when there are visitors on their place because "they wouldn't kill a woman - neither side would. That remained the only civilized part of this whole mess."

What did she mean by that statement? Why would neither side hurt a woman?

I think that both sides would not hurt a woman because the woman were the people that could have babies and if you killed all the woman then no one would be able to have babies.

I think that the reason neither side would hurt a woman is because if they did, they could get into trouble for killing someone that wasn't in the war, and didn't really do anything to them!

The women weren't the ones who could go and fight. That's not the way they did things back then. It's still not very proper to hurt a woman.

I think what they were saying is that the only rule that both sides had was that they had enough respect to not hurt women.

They wouldn't hurt a woman because women are pretty, and guys in the army spend all their time with a bunch of men, so when they finally do get to see a woman, they probably wouldn't kill her... maybe.

What this statement was referring to was the fact that neither side would vow to ever hurt a women. First of all, it is not a good thing for anyone to kill anyone, let alone for a man to kill a woman. Secondly, during this time period, most women were not involved in the war, and they were all very respected by men. Also, if a woman answered the door first, they might not kill her, whereas, if a man opened the door, they might ask what side they were on. If the man had answered wrong, he would have been killed. This statement is true!

Women were not killed because it was not honorable, the women could not fight back, and they were not truly involved in the war.

When Matt's mother said this she meant that both sides would never hurt a woman or child for that matter. I think both sides didn't see women or children as threats but they saw men as threats. This might be because some men didn't see women as high as they saw men, which in my opinion girls can be just as tough and able as boys are!

During this time when the Civil War took place soldiers were seen as honorless if they hit a women. This is one of the reasons that neither sides would ever kill a women. I still do find it quite contradictory that women were held at such a small stature, such as they weren't allowed to voice their opinion as much, they weren't allowed to go out to war, and they weren't allowed to vote or participate in government. They were almost given the same rights and lacked almost the same rights as slaves, yet they weren't allowed to be killed.

In those days, people had more manners and respect. Matt's mom knew that neither side of the war had enough loss of etiquette to harm a woman. Alowing her to answer the door would gives the soldiers no reason to have a hostile state of mind towards the family.

I don't think that either side would kill a woman or child because they weren't involved in the war at that time. It wasn't civil or respectful to kill a woman or child back then for no reason.

I think she meant that since neither side allowed women soldiers at the time they gave much respect to the women. Even if they were supporting the other side.

i think that both sides don't hurt the women because the women didn't start the war and arn't very involved in it. I think that the soldiers are reminded of there mothers, and familys and don't want to hurt the women and children for no reason. it wasn't right to kill a women or child during those times. the women answered the door first to buy there family some time and to keep them safe so that the soldiers would not immediatly shoot when someone answered the door. becuase if a man would have after the questioning they may have killed him if they did not like his answer.

The men were the ones who had to fight. The women had to stay home, cook, clean, and do other chores. I don't think that they would harm a women because they have women on their side that do the same chores and daily jobs.

I don’t think that either side would hurt a woman because, at this point in time, women did not fight in the wars. Also, the soldiers from both sides wouldn't want their wives, or sisters, or daughters to be killed (obviously). But the women were not viewed as a threat to either side.

The men will not hurt the women because they feel a need to protect them, because they don't see them as strong and dependent. When a women aswers the door, they are reminded of their woman back home and will not hurt them.

This statement was said because back in the day men valued women. Women were respected highly and if a man were to hurt or kill a women they would loose there respect from others around them. This was the only thing that had been considered civilized because in the war people were extremely violent and there was no respect for anyone or anyones property. Both sides atleast agreed on one thing, killing a women would be moraly wroung and would cost them alot of respect. I believe that no one should kill anyone in the first place but for a man to kill a women is something that dosent make any sense.

It is very disrespectful and mean to hurt a woman. Even though each side hated the other, they still both never harmed women.

This statement means that neither side would ever dare to hurt a women. During this time men were very polite to women. They acted proper around women as to how they would act around their friends. What Matt's mom meant by this statement is that at least all men still respect women, even during the war.

During this time of the Civil War it was known for men to be very honor-less if they were to hit a woman. This was the only part of the was that was civilized. Neither side of the war would hurt a woman, but the woman could hurt a man if he was on the other side of the war.

This statement is meant to say that all men still had a some morrals and would not stoop as low as to hit a woman. Also, as she says that it remained the only civilized part of this mess, she meant that it was the only right or humane thing that the men who were fighting during the war were doing.

I believe that neither sides would not hurt woman because it was very shameful and it shows no honor. Even today it is not proper to hurt a women, but back then it was more in-proper. Also, the women were to have no part in the war. They were not supposed to fight only the men.

Since way back, till now, women have been portrayed weaker then the man. Killing a weaker, unfair match, back in those days, was selfish, terrible, and definetely not honorable. Also, women are more petit and have an attractive look to men, it would be difficult to kill such a human. Although, these ideas about women being petit ran through the minds of men back then, the women today have become much larger then what they were back then. More women have jobs, women have the right to vote, women being stronger, it all happens these days. *claps* (for women)

I think that hitting a girl is very disrespectful, and most of the soldiers still wanted to have some dignity.

I think the statement meant that neither side would kill a women because women were respected back in that time. And if any side came to the door for food they had to feed them so in a way the women were helpful when it came to survial.

I do not believe that either side would hurt a women, because hurting a women would not be the answer to their problems. Women are not causing any problems toward either side, and it would also be very disrespectful for a man to hurt a women and would make the person feel very guilty.

No side would kill a woman. The women don't harm the men in any way. Since both sides have women, I don't think that they would hurt them.

Back then, women were more respected by everyone including both sides of the war during the time. If a man were to kill a woman then he would be considered very disrespectful and would have to face more consequences then simply shooting a man. If Matt were to answer the door then he would be more likely to get shot considering the fact that he was not a woman.

I believe that the reason why neither side would hurt a woman is because they weren't involved in the war. Neither side had a reason to hurt a women. And she could protect them so the army people wouldn't kill her sons.

As it has stated in the book, Matt's mom doesn't like war and shows this through numerous means. I think that she is calling the war in general uncivilized because of all the violence associated with it. When she says something is civilized she means that there isn't as much violence. Neither side would hurt a woman because back then woman were seen as inferior to men and had significantly less rights than men did. To hurt a woman would mean you were very dishonorable and had no self-respect.

I think that neither side would harm a woman because in those times women were seen as helpless and people believed that men were the most important aspect, which wwe know now that it was not so, they thought that wpomens only pourpose was to watch the kids, and birth the kids, so they wouldn't kill women because it would cause a decline in population. ping pong

I think that during this time it was very disrespectful to hurt a woman, especially when a woman is the one who has to birth the children. Men were extremely kind and gentle with women thinking that maybe they could win them over to their side with their politeness.

In the time era, men who killed woman were serious consequences then if they were to kill a man. Back then, women were respected like no other.

This was a time period where women did just little things like house chores our cooking, unlike today where women have hard working jobs and do have opinions on what is happening in the world around us. Women did not usually have an opinion on anything they just kept to themselves or talked to their friends. Neither side would hurt a women because they did not think that a women should be hurt if they do not have an opinion or even keep it to themselves. This was also a time period of men being extreme gentlemen and not saying or treating a women badly.

Matt's mom meant that with this war being so uncivilized with men killing others based on suspicion, the only moral that had been upheld was common courtesy to a woman.I believe that there are many reasons why neither side would hurt a woman. One reason would be that women were not engaged in the fighting and it would be dishonorable for a man to kill an innocent woman. Another reason would be that women held a lower stature in society and that should not be abused. I also believe that neither side would kill a woman because women could help the soldiers with food, shelter, and supplies.

That is why because women were not the ones fighting in the war. It was only the men fighting against eachother. Also, I think at the timne men respected women more and it was like a sin to kill a woman for something that she isnt even involved in.

I do not think the men would harm the women for many reasons. My main opinion however, is that many men in the war either had mothers, daughters, wives or girlfriends and they would not want them to die, so they would not kill other men's women.
